JCU Dentistry Written Application Preparation

The James Cook University (JCU) Dentistry written application is a critical component of the admissions process and carries substantial weighting in candidate selection. Unlike many other dental schools, JCU does not consider UCAT scores, making the quality of the written application a key determinant of admission success.

JCU places a strong emphasis on rural, remote, tropical, and chronic disease dentistry. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a genuine understanding of these healthcare challenges and articulate their motivations, experiences, and suitability for the profession through a series of written responses.

Dr Brad Guo and Dr Ian Tan have extensive experience reviewing successful JCU applications, having personally mentored and assessed more than 200 applicants over recent years with a strong track record of interview success. Dr Guo is an Advanced Surgical Registrar in Ophthalmology (Sydney Eye Hospital), Associate Clinical Lecturer at Adelaide Medical School, and Conjoint Clinical Lecturer at UNSW Medical School.

Dr Tan is a travelling specialist (Retinal Surgery Fellow) originating from the Royal Adelaide Hospital, currently based Freemantle Hospital (Perth) and appointed at the Oxford University Eye Hospital in 2027.

Students accepted into the program receive personalised one-to-one guidance aimed at developing a highly competitive application tailored to JCU's selection criteria.

 

Program Structure

  • Comprehensive review of the student's CV and experiences

  • Strategic consultation and guidance on response structure and content

  • Detailed feedback and direct editing of the first draft

  • Comprehensive review of the second draft to ensure all feedback has been addressed

  • Final submission review, including referee reports where applicable

 

Students may submit multiple drafts throughout the process and will continue to receive feedback until their application is ready for submission.

Registered students will receive an information package within 2–3 business days outlining the preparation process and next steps.
